Just pretending to be cooler than I really am.” On Facebook, she lists The Civil Wars, Amos Lee and Billie Holliday as musical influences and describes her genre as “a kind of folkish blues.” She tells the News & Observer in Raleigh that “I try to point my music in the direction of folks, blues, with that singer-songwriter simplistic-type feel.” Oh, and you have to love this young lady’s humility. Her husband, Chris, is the one who urged her to pursue her musical dreams. “Wife and mom took precedence over music,” she says.

She got pregnant at age 19 and dropped out of college to become a full-time mom. What the show didn’t show: Katelyn tells The Voice she started singing in elementary school and “that’s when I realized that I liked singing, I liked being on stage.” That said, she didn’t pursue music until a couple of years ago. Carson identified her as an indie-pop singer and stay-at-home-mom. Her daughter is now 5, and her husband is encouraging her to take a shot at her dream of becoming a singer. She went to college to pursue a degree in art, but took time off to start a family. Her background: Katelyn’s Voice bio tells us she competed in fine arts competitions and sang in choir in high school. Her audition: Katelyn Read, 25, of Raleigh, N.C., sang Anna Nalick’s “Breathe (2 a.m.)” in a blind audition that was part of a montage.
